What is Special Creation?

We do not know how the Creator created, [or] what processes He used, for He used processes which are not now operating anywhere in the natural universe. This is why we refer to creation as special creation. We cannot discover by scientific investigation anything about the creative processes used by the Creator. [3] (Duane Gish, Biblical Creationist. (Wikipedia, Special Creation)

Dennis Jensen of the American Scientific Affiliation states that special creation means that complex living things did not descend from simpler ones but were created independently."[4] (Wikipedia, Special Creation)

K-note:  While the term Special Creation is often associated with the most literal interpretation of the Genesis account, it can readily be used by those who propose that God has performed creative acts spread over great time. The term is sometimes used by those who simply propose Supernatural Agency. As a general rule, however, “Special Creation” applies to “instant” creative acts, for which there is no precedent “natural” cause.

Question: If you are a Creationist, what part of God’s creative enterprise do you associate with "Special Creation"? (All, some, or a blend). Which parts do you associate with a gradual process? (If the latter, do you see those processes as guided, or conforming strictly to a natural process?
